WELCOME TO MADRID

1ST DAY
 Sunday the 7th

Briaghell
On Sunday, I was woken up by my partner’s parents' voice. They had just come back from the marathon of Madrid in which they participated. They were so proud that they shouted everywhere in the flat. It was really funny because they showed their medal to everybody.

Then, we went out to join the Spanish students and their partners. We visited a huge market called the Rastro. The Rastro is an open market, held every Sunday in the center of the city and it is very popular in Madrid. You can buy many things (souvenirs, clothes), which aren't very expensive. We walked for three hours.

Then, we went into a first tapas bar: we ate there some tapas. Tapas are typically Spanish salty snacks. For example, tortilla is a kind of tapas. Then, we went to a giant square where we ate nachos (see photo), which are typically Spanish, in a second tapas bar.

After that, the boys started playing football, so Léo, Lucie and I went to a shopping center where we saw huge legs of jam. Jam, or “jamon" in Spanish, is a typically Spanish type of food and it is really expensive (more than 400 Euros for one leg!).

Then we went back home after this fantastic day. :)

For our program:

-Morning: computer room; Workshops (1 and 2)

-Afternoon: Visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

-Morning: In the computer room, we started  to work on the video, which we had to do per groups of 4.

The topic was: " What are the differences between Spain and France?"

We watched the videos on Friday.

After that we did a workshop: the first one was about renewable energies and the second one was about environmental problems: "home sweet home"

-Afternoon: At 4.30 pm, we visited the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, an amazing stadium, where some people saw Ozil, a football player.

When the visit was finished, we went to the lake of the Retiro Park. We paddled a small boat. It was a really nice stroll. Later, we went to a restaurant where you can eat a sandwich for one euro (only on Wednesday and Sunday).

There were too many people so we took our sandwich and went to another place.

Then it was time to go back to our host families’.

Léo (French student)

The first meeting of the day was at 8:30 AM at school. All the students with the Spanish and French teachers had to leave from there to go to the Reina Sofia Museum. Before getting to the Museum, everybody walked in Madrid and there we visited some important places of the city.

First, we went to the Retiro Park and there, a Spanish teacher explained to us many things about the history of the park. He talked about lots of details to be found in the park, like the construction of different palaces, the meaning of statues, the ancient use of special buildings, etc…

Then, after having left the park, we went to the North station, a giant station which has been rehabilitated and turned into a large indoor garden. Inside this curious building, we can find some palm trees, lots of greenery and a pond where turtles live.

We finally arrived to the Reina Sofia Museum at 10:30 AM. In this museum, we had a look at many paintings painted by a lot of famous artists like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Mirò, etc... We saw the most famous painting of the museum: Guernica, a terrible canvas painted by Picasso about the Spanish Civil War.

Lina (French student)

After having visited the famous Reina Sofia museum, we went to have lunch in a place which is close to this museum. Some of us went to McDonald’s while the rest of the group stayed there , eating the picnic that our partner had prepared for us. Diego did a little show with his diabolo while we were eating. We all tried to do it and for the majority (including me of course) it was a disaster!

When we finished our lunch, we went for a walk to the place where we had a meeting with everybody at 2:15. We separated and Léa S., Laïla, Sara and I went to this place. There, we saw the statue of Filip IV and a fountain. We interviewed some people for our video about the differences between the French and the Spanish culture. It was funny!

We met with the rest of the group but a lot of them were late so the teachers were not so happy. When everybody was there, our guide came and we went to the Royal Palace. We saw the inner court first. It was very beautiful. For the visit, we were divided into two groups: a Spanish group and a French group. The number of rooms was amazing. Each room was different in terms of decoration from the previous.

At the end of the visit, we were a bit tired because we walked a lot trough the palace. Léa G. and I wanted to eat churros! So we all went for a walk. We bought souvenirs for us and for our family in typical Spanish shops. We arrived to a shop and we all bought churros; it was delicious! Later, we went to a place where we saw a demonstration in opposition to King Juan Carlos I. We stayed there for a long time.

We went back home after having seen a dance show of amateur people who danced on the French song "Alors on danse"!
