COMENIUS SCIENCE AND PLANET 2011-2012
From October 2011, a group of pupils and
teachers from each of our partner schools in Spain, Italy, Belgium, Austria and
France worked together for our project: Science and Planet, the environment in
our life, the science on our Planet and our life on the Planet.
Our first meeting of the project was in Tielt
(Belgium). Unfortunately we were only five countries accepted from our
agencies. Three countries were rejected. So in our first meeting we had to
leave out some of things we had planned.
The aim of this project is to connect science
and education and research. It wants to offer interdisciplinary approaches of
sciences and technology to our pupils in addition to the regular subjects
physics, chemistry, biology and biotechnology.
In November (2011) teachers explained the
Comenius exchange project to the students. In December they knew their
partner’s name and they started to talk with them by e-mail. They were excited to
meet Belgian and Italian pupils.
Sunday 22nd April
Belgian and Italian delegations arrive at
Madrid airport. They stayed with Spanish
host families.
On Monday they had breakfast in the school cafeteria at IES Beatriz Galindo and they were welcomed by the Headmaster. During the morning they attended a workshop called “Biodiversity and Culture I” where the Spanish, Italian and Belgian students exchanged their respective cultures. Afterwards they had a guided tour around Madrid “Madrid imprescindible: Madrid de los Austrias”. Following the tour they had lunch and later visited the Botanic Garden where they discovered the different kinds of vegetation. That evening the students returned home to their host families.
Tuesday
24th April
The morning began with a workshop called “Video
quiz” which dealt once again with the subject of Biodiversity. The students exchanged the work that they had
carried out the day before. After a
short break the students visited “La casa de Amberes de Madrid”. The Belgian students were very pleased to
find out that in Madrid there is a Flemish Museum and cultural centre. Some workshops were organised in this
cultural centre “Festival des metiers” in which the students participated in
the elaboration of artisan products, glass, and watches, the dyeing of
fabrics. They studied the chemical
composition of the dyes for the materials.
After returning to the school and eating lunch, they visited the
interactive science museum “Cosmo Caixa”.
There, they participated in an interactive tour organised by a guide, in
which they engaged in activities relating to recycling of glass and plastic
materials and waste. The students then
returned to their host families after a very busy day.

Wednesday 25th April
A workshop called “Geociencia” was organised in
which, using computers, the students prepared montages about science in order
to later organise a competition with prizes.
During these days various visits were organised for the Belgian and
Italian students. As the Italian
students had already visited the Reina Sofia Museum during a three month stay
in Madrid as part of an educational program, they preferred to visit the “Museo
Geominero”. After completing these
visits the entire group came together once again to eat lunch in a fun
restaurant called “Ojalá”. The enjoyable
thing about this restaurant is that diners eat while sitting on the sand
covered floor. The last visit of the day
was to see the Ayuntamiento of Madrid. As every other day they returned back to
their homes to share their experiences with their host families.
Thursday 26th April
The Belgian students visited Toledo and its
many museums and the Church of Santo Tome while the Italian students went to
“Instituto de calcografia Academia de bellas artes” where they discovered the
technique of engraving.
Friday 27th April
The first part of the morning was spent in the
computer room where the final product “Biodiversidad y Cultura del Planeta” was
elaborated. From 11am to 12.30pm the
exhibition “Ciencia y planeta”, in which the winners received prizes, was
organised. To close the program the
students from “Conservatorio Arturo Soria” performed a concert consisting of
pieces in various languages, Italian, English, French and Spanish. From 1.30pm to 2.30pm a goodbye aperitivo was
offered in the school cafeteria. During
the afternoon the Belgain students and their Spanish partners visited the Prado
Museum. The Italians preferred to spend
their last evening shopping in the centre of Madrid.

Saturday 28th April
After a busy week the students said a sad a
goodbye to their host families. Some of
them will see each other again during the summer. The biodiversity served as a pretext to form
close bonds.
Marta Valero's travel diary
Last
February, 14 students between 17 and 15 were able to spend a week in Tielt,
Belgium, as part of the European program Comenius, which this year is focused
on “Science and Planet”.
For seven days, from the 5th to the
12th February, we shared house with a Belgian partner, taking part
in educational activities and visiting some of the amazing places Belgium is
full of, together with a group of nine people from Lyon, France.
Despite the incredibly cold weather, we received a warm welcome from the
inhabitants of Tielt and the students and teachers of the De Bron school where
our partners study, who were always willing to help us. All along the week, we
participated in scientific workshops related to water such as how to recognize
when it’s clean or how make purifying plants work. Also, we had the chance to
visit such lovely places as Ghent, Bruges and Brussels, and we were even able
to participate in some experiments made in the Ghent University laboratories.
For
a week, we have mixed our culture with theirs, and could see the main
differences between their way of life and ours, taste their delicious food such
as chocolate, cheese and beer, and listen to the music they use to hear.
Thanks to this program, we have been able to
spend one of the greatest weeks of our lives, see breathtakingly beautiful
snowy landscapes, and learn a lot about something that concerns our lives as
much as water, as well as improving our English, learning a little Dutch, and
break the stereotypes about Belgian people.
Not
only for the kindness of their people and the beauty of their country, but
mainly because Belgium and its inhabitants made us feel like home, this
experience was impossible to forget and I would not hesitate a single second if
I were given the opportunity to repeat it over and over again. Ikhou van jou,
Bëlgie.
